Im memoriam

The memory is a differentiating fact between humans. When an important moment is lost, it is as if we had not lived it. As adulthood looms closer, we go on leaving behind moments of our childhood first, then of our adolescence; moments which seemed important at that time.

“Im memoriam” brings together fourteen moments of my childhood, in some cases using photographs or chatting with people who shared those moments. With me it is a personal challenge at a time in my life of which I keep no special memory. This coming back to my past has been, in a way, a slow process which lasted 2 years. Each piece of work is a conversation, a recovery of my personal history, which I had thought lost. I made them come up to the surface with tastes and smells which I thought had disappeared.

““Im memoriam” speaks about me, but could also be images of many other people who see their childhood reflected in my pieces of work; this is the reason why I’ve made them impersonal, leaving them with their own imprints with the masks that cover the eyes and nose. In this way the image stops being only individual and turns into collective, restructuring on its basis.
